Before folding fans, Tuanshan 团扇 were widely used especially by women. Dating back to the Han Dynasty, the silk fans were often adorned with flowers, animals, and mythical imagery.
Tuanshan can come in various shapes, despite the name "round fan". Popular shapes include flower petals, circle, oblong, and even Chinese garden window-inspired forms.
